Lessons in making Chinese Style Pajamas (Absolute Beginner and Beginner Level II) and Japanese Clothes.
Chinese Style Pajamas for the Absolute Beginner This class is for those interested in, but utterly inexperienced with sewing. (In particular, this class is for those who aren't certain they want invest themselves too deeply in sewing)
We will create one set of basic Chinese style pajamas (a Mandarin collared top with buttons or other fasteners and simple pants), starting from cutting the fabric to placing button holes and finishing hems. We will go over basic terminology, tools, and techniques to ease the beginner into the rewarding realm of making your own clothes. This class is concerned with eliminating any ‘fear’ of sewing or stress over completing an individual project, and introducing you to how much fun it can be! Level: Beginner Length: 8 hours (can be scheduled for 1 or 2 days). All materials provided. Cost: Individual*: $240 Group*: $40/person (5 person minimum) * In the Group class, the focus is on a single project, which belongs to the instructor at the end of the class. In the Individual class, the project will belong to the student.
Chinese Style Pajamas for the Beginner - Level II For those who already know the basics, or have completed the Absolute Beginner class.
Each person in this class will simultaneously make their own version of the same pattern, the Chinese style pajamas, while Rebecca provides guidance and step-by-step expertise. More involved garment construction, such as decorative facings, will be taught, and students will have ‘homework’ to complete after each class.
A supply list (pattern, fabric, etc.) will be provided in advance. You must have access to a sewing machine and know how to use it.
Level: Advanced Beginner Length: 8 hours (2 days, with enough time in between for students to do their 'homework') Cost: Individual: $240 Group: $40/person (5 person minimum)
Japanese Clothes These garments are a wonderful challenge for any level of sewing skills, since Japanese clothes were traditionally sewn by hand with simple stitches. The garments can be as complex or as simple as you feel comfortable with.
In this one-day seminar, Rebecca will take you through the intricacies of making custom Japanese clothes, including measuring, developing the pattern, and estimating yardage. The art of making Japanese clothes opens you to a whole new world of style and tailoring that is not found in department stores. This class works with the book Make Your Own Japanese Clothes by John Marshall.
Level: Beginner through Expert Length: 1 day, 2.5 hours Cost: Group: $20/person (5 person minimum) Individual: $75
